Step Back
Step Back – Cover

“Step Back” was my first vocal track and was not originally meant to be released. At first, there were lyrics, but I completely discarded them during the recording process. In the end, the track grew out of vocal improvisation and turned into something very different from what I had initially planned.

At the time, I had no idea that this particular piece would resonate with such different people. Looking back, that response encouraged me to bring my own voice more strongly into my music.

The artist, Theo Richter, also played “Step Back” in his studio. While it was playing, he began to rework a painting that had already been finished. From the original work, something new emerged, now carrying the title “Geburt einer Berglandschaft”.
An image that tells its own story, reveals different movements and brings layers to the surface.

What strikes me about this artwork is that it does not simply depict “Step Back”. It feels more as though the painting responded to the track in its own way and gave it another meaning.
All these forms, structures and colors seem to move toward one another, condense and dissolve again. And although the image itself is still, there is an astonishing amount of movement within it.

I know that feeling well: a work, in whatever artistic form, can reach a point where it asks for change. Something that once felt right may later need another shape. I experience this with music, too. Sometimes it takes a bit of distance to understand what wants to stay, what has changed and where a piece is actually heading.

Thank you, Theo, for giving my music space in your work once again. Seeing “Step Back” continue to resonate in another artistic language is something I find genuinely impressive.
